KARL WEIGL
Symphony no. 4 in F minor (1936) · Symphony no. 6 in A minor (1947)
DEUTSCHE STAATSPHILHARMONIE RHEINLAND-PFALZ JÜRGEN BRUNS
C5385 PC: 21 UPC: 845221053851
In terms of style, with his works linked to basic tonalities Weigl drew on the sound realm of late Romanticism, from whose aesthetics he never departed in favour of more progressive contemporary trends. Whereas Weigl’s Symphony No. 1, written in 1908, associatively evokes the mood of a composer thinking of new territory and inquiring into the future, the dissimilar pair of his Symphonies Nos. 4 and 6 shows the musician’s intellect at historically distinctive periods, allowing an assessment to be made as to whether what could be expected, intended and hoped for at the time of his early works was achieved or whether it developed in an entirely different manner. The background to Symphony No. 4 in 1936 was the emergence of dictatorial Austro-Fascism. Symphony No. 6 of 1947 is in a certain sense a continuation and a conclusion following the end of the Nazi terror and a war that did not remain without profound changes and far-reaching effects for almost all the countries in the world.

DEUTSCHE STATSPHILHARMONIE RHEINLAND-PFALZ KARL-HEINZ STEFFENS
C5379 PC: 21 UPC: 845221053790
From the outset, Ernst Krenek stood between the sometimes antagonistic musical worlds of
his mentor Franz Schreker, on the one hand, who wrote in the world of late Romanticism, and Arnold Schoenberg, on the other, who broke new ground. So, his own development towards becoming a unique personality in modern music history progressed correspondingly slowly.
In his subsequent travelling years, as a composer he was on a quest for new means of expression, finally culminating in two such contrasting works as the jazz opera Jonny spielt auf and the technically strictly twelve-tone opera Karl V. Afterwards, he occasionally resorted to these earlier stylistic devices like we can hear on this recording as example of the 1927 composed Potpourrieand years later written Tricks and triffles (1945)

Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 9 · Symphonic Minutes, Op. 36
DEUTSCHE STAATSPHILHARMONIE RHEINLAND-PFALZ · ROBERTO PATERNOSTRO
C5386 PC: 21 UPC: 845221053868
The Symphony No. 1 in D minor op. 9 belongs to Dohnányi’s early years of success.
Among all the influences of the late Romantic tradition, that by Brahms’ music can be discerned here once more. From it, Dohnányi forms a kind of early Neo-Romanticism that can be viewed as a continuation of the 19thcentury while avoiding the Expressionist, sprawling violence of the beginnings of Modernism in the 20thcentury. Reminiscent of Mahler and Strauss is the sovereign treatment of the large orchestra, in which many details stand out, making a major contribution towards the quality of the work. The Symphonic Minutes op. 36 was written in 1933 in the context to compose a Hungarian dance game. With this CD Capriccio starts a new Edition with recordings of these still less known but powerful Music from the hungarian Composer Ernst von Dohnanyi.

During his lifetime, Josef Labor was a pianist and organist recognized throughout Europe and a celebrity of the Viennese music scene. At the age of three, he lost his sight due to smallpox.
Up to now, Josef Labor has been little researched in musicology. Labor was not an expressive
musician along the lines of late Romanticism, who made his own life into the starting point of his art. Nor was he a musical innovator, nor simply a conservative. The linking principle is
classicist aesthetics, setting great store by clear formal structure and balanced proportions. In this adherence to the ideals of Viennese Classicism, he shows himself to be unimpressed by the vehement conflicts of the time between New Germans and supporters of Brahms. During his lifetime and in his generation Labor was an outsider as a composer, a kind of musical solitary, who positioned himself in a very special way, independent of the spirit of the age.

‘Yesterday, with genuine pleasure I attended a kind rehearsal of the opera ‘Peter Schmoll und seine Nachbarn’ by my pupil Mr. Carl Maria von Weber, and I cannot help attesting with truth, […] that I consider it only right and proper that I recommend this, my favourite pupil, be welcomed by the entire musical and sensitive world’.Johann Michael Haydn, 1802
After the artful overture, which may make an absolute claim to autonomy, Peter Schmollshows a colourful succession of a total of 20 numbers, as was customary in the musical comedies composed in this manner for about three decades. In Peter Schmoll, we see glimpses of the ‘typical’ Weber, based primarily on the melodic idea, such as we know him today from Der Freischütz, written in 1817.

With his opera The Diary of Anne Frank(1968/69), by virtue of the subject alone Grigory Frid could be sure of attracting attention beyond the borders of Russia. The remaining enormous oeuvre by the composer, covering mainly instrumental works, songs, radio and film music, still remains to be discovered and treated in depth. Both prior to and after the collapse of the Communist USSR, Frid was awarded the highest honours, e.g. the title of Artist of Merit (1986) and the Moscow Prize (1996). If it is probably not erroneous to view Frid’s aesthetic position in a propinquity to Dmitri Shostakovich, on the one hand, and in the environment of his contemporaries a generation younger such as Edison Denisov, Sofia Gubaidulina and Alfred Schnittke. As in the cases of these composers, Frid’s music is also positioned in a field of tension between following the great Russian tradition and the quest for possibilities of expression in keeping with new, modern and international trends.

Joseph Martin Kraus, also named as the "Swedish Mozart", has been many years a shadowy existence in music history. Gluck and even Joseph Haydn saw "a real genius" in his virtuose and nearly early-romantic works. His position as composer at the swedish court under Gustav III. made it possible to have a fix income and a blithe creativity. This CD-Set gives us an overall musical impression about his compositions in all genres: Beginning with the incidental music to Amphitryon, the high virtuos Italian Cantatas, his Symphonies from different life periods, till the early String Quartets- Gluck and Haydn have not been mistaken.

As good as every music lover is acquainted with Der Freischütz, but the fewest are aware of Euryanthe. In the light of the musical quality of the opera, the disdain for it does not seem fitting. Euryanthewas Weber’s most ambitious project, one that anything but backfired. The composition may certainly be termed ground-breaking and truly deserves more attention. ‘A chain of glittering jewels from the beginning to the end. All witty and ingenious’, Robert Schumann in his critic about Euryanthe.

In his late years Hanns Eisler concentrated more and more to compile his film music scores for the concert hall. That's the case also with his Leipzig Symphonywhich was not completed when he died. The that time young composer Thilo Medek recognized this gap and completed the symphony with different pieces out of Eislers film music scores.
The compilation of Funeral pieces from Film Music scoreshas been realized by Tobias Faßhauer and Jürgen Bruns in 2015. The scores uses film music from 1947/48 Hollywood movie So well remembered. Already at the end of 1955 Eisler wrote the music for the KZ Documentary Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog) for the french movie director Alain Resnais (1922–2014). After many successful concert performances (with and without movie) this piece can be listened now the first time on CD.

‘I have always viewed Dr. Weigl as one of the best composers of the old generation; one of those continuing the illustrious Viennese tradition.' - Arnold Schönberg
In terms of style, with his works linked to basic tonalities Weigl drew on the sound realm of late Romanticism, from whose aesthetics he never departed in favour of more progressive contemporary trends. The Symphony No. 1 in E major op. 5, written in 1908, is also far removed from any avant-garde experiments in the Romantic tradition, as epitomized among the Austrian composers of that time in the field of the symphony by e.g. Alexander von Zemlinsky, Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek or Franz Schmidt. In the autumn of 1938 Weigl emigrated from Vienna via France and Great Britain to the USA, where he initially had to accept musical odd jobs, gave private lessons and was finally able to work as a teacher at different musical institutes such as the Boston Conservatory and the Philadelphia Academy of Music.

Isang Yun’s works are inconceivable without the East Asian philosophy of the Tao. The more than one hundred works composed by Isang Yun in Europe combine national tradition with international modernity. Yun found his way to an individual sound in Europe through the reminiscence of Chinese-Korean court music. Furthermore, the oeuvre is characterised by the flexible, lively tone… of the traditional music of his home, by the art of the flowing transition from the spirit of the Tao. The chamber music occupies an important role in Yun’s oeuvre; the composer experimented with not only the most diverse and also unusual combinations of instruments, but also continued to compose in traditional classical genres.

The both hailed from Russia, and they were contemporaries. But their biographies could hardly have been more different: Igor Stravinsky and Dmitri Shostakovich. The one was an urbane dandy, and the other an introverted melancholic. Both were deeply rooted in the music of their homeland, Stravinsky in the wealth of myths and folk customs of past centuries, and Shostakovich directly in the historical events that shook Russia to its very core and frequently gave rise to existential fears. Cornelius Meister, just awarded as "Conductor of the year" by the german classical music award Opus, knows again how to handle these different colours of sounds and shows them in an most transparent way. The ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra has been his best disposed partner for these recordings.

As an internationally successful pianist and composer, Erwin Schulhoff was one of the most important Czech artists in the first half of the 20thcentury. For the last twentyfive years, his works are being rediscovered, and it goes to show that without him, a facet of the music of the 20th century would be missing. Not only did he abhor mainstream, but, like a sponge, he absorbed all musical currents of his time, and thus becoming a polystylist. For the first time now available in a 6 CD-Box you'll find this enormous diversity of his musically work.
The early piano pieces and string quartets, the symphonies and finally his Jazz Improvisations shows how tricky he played with the different genres and trends of his time.

Walter Braunfels is a composer whose music died twice: Once when the Nazis declared his music “degenerate art”. Then again when post-war Germany had little use for the various schools of tonal music; when the arbiters of taste considered any form of romantic music – almost the whole pre-war aesthetic – to be tainted. This 7threlease of Capriccio’s Braunfels Edition shows again his large range of colorful music and focus this time on his early great Orchestral work Fantastical Apparitions Of a Theme by Hector Berlioz, Op. 25 (1914-1917) – the first complete recording of this amazing composition, compiled with his last orchestral work, the Sinfonia brevis op. 69(1948).

‘María de Buenos Aires brought me inner peace, a partial serenity that has changed my way of approaching music. I reached the zenith of my musical life at the time. (Astor Piazzolla)
Piazzolla himself equated María to the tango and its historical ups and downs; and this is probably also the primary aid to understanding the reception of the contents of the piece. Next to that, there is also a musical diction that is entirely unique in the second half of the 20thcentury, indeed in the New Music scene as a whole. ‘I learnt something: to be patient, to be self-critical, to co-ordinate reflection with passion. Now I am told: ‘That is a different Piazzolla’, but that is not the case. I am the same man, but I have reached a synthesis’. (Astor Piazzolla)

Somewhere between the first and second decade of the “short” 20th century, the great Viennese musical tradition of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, and Mahler supposedly crashed into the limits of tonality and came to a halt. Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg composed anew, now according to what was supposed to be the “historically inevitable” system of atonality. Karl Weigl went on to write marvelously traditional music. Schoenberg wrote in 1938 that “I always considered Dr. Weigl one of the best composers of the old school; one of those who continued the glittering Viennese tradition.” And that is what we hear in abundance in Weigl’s output throughout the genres: His symphonies , his songs , his concertos , his string quartets , and the chamber works for piano, cello, and violin in various combinations.

Gottfried von Einem was one of those great composer personalities that played a major role in rebuilding the waste of the Austrian music scene after 1945, following the devasting cultural policies of Austrofascism, which were above all hostile to modern trends, and even more so those of the Nazis. We owe Einem not least his rescue of the note material of many works by banned colleagues from destruction. Catchy thematic and melodic ideas, sharply accentuated rhythm, strong gestural and dance-like energy and a pronounced feeling for differentiated timbres determined Gottfried von Einem’s musical diction at an early age, features he retained throughout his life.

The Austrian composer Gottfried von Einem got to know the mechanism of this process himself, and it was ultimately thanks to some good fortune that he did not become one of the countless victims of the Nazi system of injustice.

Catchy thematic and melodic ideas, sharply accentuated rhythm, strong gestural and dance-like vigour and a pronounced feeling for differentiated timbre characterized von Einem’s highly personal musical diction, which can also be discerned in the opera Der Prozess. Einem-pupil, composer and conductor HK Gruber made an amazing, by audience and press enthusiastic celebtrated concertant performance during the Salzburg Festival 2018 which is documented on this recording.
